Practice Space is a contemplative design studio based in Portland, OR exploring how media, experiences and objects can be reminders for awareness, connection & practice.
The late Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh said it plainly: the forms must change so the essence can remain. We keep coming back to that. Contemplative traditions (like Buddhism) didn’t survive for centuries behind monastery walls alone; they have endured by finding cultural resonance with everyday people, in homes, arts, ritual, and language. In fact, some of the most potent practices for liberating the mind and cultivating the heart originated from “hidden yogis,” practicing within the wildness of ordinary life.
These traditions are relatively new in the West, so their shape is still emerging. What new forms will preserve & carry the essence of these wisdom traditions in our culture, cultivating compassion, clarity, and awareness in the dance of modern life? That’s our guiding question.
To be clear, you don’t need a cushion to meditate. You don’t need incense, the sound of trickling water, or even solitude. But environments matter. They can remind you, invite you back, and lower the friction to begin again. Our work carries this intention.
We’re devoted to supporting people on their path and elevating contemplative traditions in a changing world for the benefit of all.
5% of profits go to a retreat scholarship fund for underserved practitioners.
Ben Sherwyn, Co-founder
For nearly a decade spanning his mid-20’s to 30’s, Ben was fortunate to live alongside and learn from a number of life-changing meditation teachers. He worked and resided at practice and retreat centers across contemplative traditions, nearly ordaining as a Buddhist monk – which evolved into years of serving as a traveling assistant to Anam Thubten Rinpoche, an extraordinary Tibetan meditation master, scholar, and author in the Nyingma/Dzogchen tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
In addition to his deep interest in meditation and eastern wisdom traditions, he was an active member of the San Francisco arts community for nearly two decades, exploring mediums and hosting experimental art events.
From 2015-2022 Ben ran a small design business shipping works from his studio around the world, and taught woodworking and furniture-making at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. As the studio grew with employees and apprentices, it adopted paid meditation periods and emphasized an exploration of methods for incorporating meditation practices into the studio’s production work. Ben currently resides in Portland, Oregon.
Clare Seekins, Co-founder
Clare’s journey to meditation unfolded through years of searching for the roots of lasting change in society. She pursued this question through many paths—from political organizing to strategy consulting, from international development to human centered design—and came to understand that meaningful transformation often begins with our relationship to ourselves.
In Brooklyn, during the strange silence of 2020, meditation found Clare. What began with apps and uncertain moments of sitting gradually opened into a practice that transformed her sense of what’s possible—in individual experience, in human connection, in the tender space between doing and being. She began to see how presence creates its own kind of change, flowing outward in widening circles from self to world.
This opening to practice led Clare deeper into both traditional wisdom and contemporary applications. In recent years she has enjoyed Lama Tsultrim Allione’s Feeding Your Demons Level I, residential retreats with Zoketsu Norman Fischer and Tsoknyi Rinpoche, been trained as a Leadership & Personal Development Coach through Brown University and mindfulness-based programming through SIYLI, and served 18 months on the board of Boundless Freedom Project, where they share mindfulness and compassion practices with people impacted by incarceration.
